Post-Renovation Dust: Why Normal Cleaning Does Not Remove It

The short answer
Renovation dust is finer than household dust and settles into filters, fabric, clothing and high ledges, so dry dusting and a filterless vacuum move it around instead of removing it. Health Canada's advice after a renovation is to wipe hard floors and surfaces with a wet cloth or mop, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter, and change the furnace filter if the work was dusty. In a home built before 1991, the asbestos and lead questions come first.
The renovation finished, the house was cleaned properly, and three days later every dark surface has a film on it again. That is not a bad clean. Post-renovation dust behaves differently from household dust: there is far more of it, it is much finer, and a renovation loads several places that keep releasing it for days after the trades have gone. Below: what it is made of, the two material questions that come first in an older GTA house, the order that gets it out, and what cleaning will never fix.
Why the dust is back three days after the house was cleaned
Because the first clean only emptied one of the places it is sitting. A renovation does not leave a single layer on flat surfaces you can see — it loads reservoirs, and each one releases on its own schedule as the house is used again. Until every reservoir is emptied, the room keeps re-dusting itself and it looks like the cleaning failed.
- The forced-air system. If the furnace fan ran while the work was on, the return pulled dust in and the supply distributed it. Health Canada's renovation guidance says plainly that if the work was particularly dusty, you should consider changing the filter in your furnace. Pull a floor register and look into the boot underneath: grit down there tells you the system was moving dust while the work was on.
- Textiles. Curtains, upholstery, bedding, mattresses, area rugs and carpet hold fine dust and give it back every time somebody sits down. Hard surfaces show dust, so they get cleaned; fabric hides it, so it does not.
- Clothing. This one is counter-intuitive and it is why the dust seems to follow you around the house. In its guidance on silica dust, the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety notes that dust remains on clothing and that exposure occurs when clothes are handled, put on or taken off, causing the dust to become airborne again. Work clothes carried through a clean room re-seed it.
- Ledges nobody wipes. Tops of doors and door casings, the top edge of baseboards, light fixtures and fan blades, curtain rods, the top of the fridge and kitchen cabinets, stair stringers, and window tracks. Miss one and it sheds onto a floor that was just mopped.
- The debris still in the house. Offcuts, bags of scrap, a torn-out vanity in the garage. Each one releases another dose every time it is handled.
What post-renovation dust is actually made of
It depends entirely on what was done, and that decides both how fine the particles are and whether the cleanup is a cleaning job at all. Demolition in an older house can produce something you should not be sweeping up.

In a house built before 1991, the material question comes before the cleaning question
This is the reason to read a cleaning article before booking a renovation rather than after. Two common materials in older GTA housing stock become a health problem specifically when they are made into dust, which is exactly what a renovation does.
Asbestos
Health Canada's position is that before 1990, asbestos was mainly used for insulating buildings and homes against cold weather and noise, and for fireproofing. Its list of older building materials that may still contain it is longer than most homeowners expect: house siding, cement and plaster, floor and ceiling tiles, roofing products including tar paper and shingles, insulation including around hot water pipes and tanks, and surface treatments including paint, putty, drywall, caulking, sealants and spackling. Fibres are released by drilling, sawing, sanding, scraping, removing, breaking apart and smoothing rough edges.
The same guidance is equally clear about the other side of it: there are no significant health risks if materials containing asbestos are left undisturbed, isolated in an attic, sealed behind walls and floorboards, or tightly bound in products that are in good condition. Intact floor tile you are covering over is not the same problem as floor tile you are lifting. Before renovating or remodelling, Health Canada asks you to hire a professional to test, and if one finds asbestos, to hire a qualified removal specialist — before the work starts, not after.
Lead paint
Health Canada's guidance is that a home probably contains lead-based paint if it was built before 1960; if it was built between 1960 and 1990, the exterior may contain it, and interior surfaces may contain lead in smaller amounts that could still be harmful. Its renovation page adds the detail that catches people out: homes built before 1991 may have base coats of lead-based paint beneath the newer ones. Houses built after 1990 should not contain lead, because consumer paints produced in Canada and the U.S. were virtually lead-free by then. To find out, send paint chip samples to a lab or hire a contractor with x-ray equipment.
Two lines from that guidance are worth reading twice if there are small children in the house: even small amounts of dust with lead are dangerous to infants and children, and there is currently no known safe level of lead exposure. Health Canada also notes that leaving intact lead paint alone is sometimes safer than removing it, as long as it is not chipping or within reach of children, and that painting or covering over it is an acceptable option when the underlying leaded paint is not disturbed.
The order that actually removes it
The sequence matters more than the products. Every step below exists to avoid the two ways people lose a day: cleaning something twice because dust fell on it from above, and turning dry dust into smeared paste by reaching for a wet cloth first.
- Finish the dusty work before you clean anythingCleaning between sanding passes is wasted labour. Until the last sanding and cutting is done, containment and ventilation are the whole job: Health Canada advises sealing off the work area to reduce the movement of dust and fumes into other parts of the house, and opening windows or using exhaust fans to keep the home ventilated during and after the project.
- Get the debris out of the house firstOffcuts, packaging, torn-out fixtures and bags of scrap all release more dust every time they are handled. Move them out before the clean, not after it, and see the disposal table below — none of it is going to the curb.
- Vacuum dry, from the top down, with a HEPA filterCeiling fixtures and fan blades, tops of doors and casings, curtain rods and blinds, walls, then trim, then floors. Health Canada advises using a vacuum with a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter to trap small particles where possible. CCOHS names HEPA-filtered vacuuming and wet methods as the housekeeping controls for fine mineral dust, and lists dry sweeping among the activities that create exposure rather than reduce it.
- Then go wet, in the same orderHealth Canada's instruction after renovations is to clean hard floors and surfaces with a wet cloth or mop to remove dust and dirt. Change the water far more often than feels necessary — a grey bucket is just redistributing the dust — and rinse or swap cloths between rooms.
- Deal with the textiles as a separate passLaunder curtains, bedding and washable covers. Vacuum upholstery and mattresses with the HEPA machine rather than beating them. Wash work clothes separately from other laundry — Health Canada's instruction for clothes worn during lead paint removal, and a sensible default after any dusty job.
- Change the furnace filter, and check the registersIf the work was particularly dusty, Health Canada advises changing the furnace filter. A new filter behind a system full of construction dust loads up fast, so check it again a couple of weeks later.
- Plan a second pass, and judge it by test rather than by calendarDust that was airborne during the first clean settles afterwards. Rather than guessing at an interval, run a dark microfibre cloth along a high ledge, the top of a door and one window track. If it comes back grey, the reservoirs are not empty and another pass is due.
What cleaning cannot fix
Some of what people book a post-renovation clean to solve is not dust at all, and another visit will not change it.
- The smell. New paint, varnish, glues, adhesives, cabinets and composite flooring release volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde into indoor air — off-gassing, not residue. Health Canada's answer is ventilation, low-emission products and time, and it notes that when humidity is high, products tend to release formaldehyde faster, which is worth knowing in a GTA August. No cleaning product removes it.
- Dust that went into a wall, an attic or loose-fill insulation. It is sealed away and it is not a cleaning target. If your attic has vermiculite insulation, Health Canada's advice is stronger than leaving it alone: do not disturb it, do not store things up there, keep children out, and seal gaps around the attic hatch, light fixtures and outlets.
- Etching, scratches and overspray on new glass. - A dust problem that never ends. If a room keeps re-dusting months later with no renovation in sight, the cause sits in the house rather than in the last clean, and booking more visits will not find it.
Where the debris goes in Halton, Peel and Toronto
Nowhere in this part of the GTA is renovation waste a curbside item, and finding that out on collection morning is how it ends up sitting in the garage, shedding dust into the house you just cleaned. Fees and hours below are as published by each municipality on 16 August 2026.

When to do this yourself, and when it is worth paying someone
For one or two rooms of new-material work — new drywall, new trim, fresh paint, nothing older than 1991 disturbed — most people should do this themselves. It takes time and a methodical order rather than any trained skill: a vacuum with a HEPA filter (rentable if you do not own one), a stack of microfibre cloths, two buckets and a spare furnace filter.
Paying for it earns its keep in four situations: a whole-house renovation where the reservoir list is long and the ledges are high; a hard move-in date, where the work has to finish in one day rather than spread over two weekends; a household with asthma or a young child, where the second and third passes are the ones that matter and also the ones that get skipped; and a house going on the market. If you do bring someone in, say "the house has just come out of a renovation" when you ask for the quote, and name the rooms and the ceiling heights. One line does not move: if asbestos or lead may have been disturbed, that is an abatement question and not a cleaning booking.
Frequently asked questions
How long does post-renovation dust keep reappearing?
As long as one of the reservoirs is still full. The usual holdouts are the furnace filter, textiles and high ledges that were missed on the first pass. Rather than guessing at a number of days, run a dark microfibre cloth along the top of a door and one window track; if it comes back grey, another pass is due.
Can I just use my regular vacuum for renovation dust?
A vacuum without a HEPA filter can pass the finest particles straight back into the room through the exhaust. Health Canada's advice after renovations is to use a vacuum with a high efficiency particulate air filter where possible, and CCOHS names HEPA-filtered vacuuming and wet methods as the housekeeping controls for fine mineral dust.
Should the cleaning happen before or after the trades finish?
After. Cleaning between sanding passes is wasted work. While the job is running, the useful steps are the ones Health Canada describes for the work itself: seal off the work area to limit dust and fumes moving into the rest of the house, and keep the home ventilated with open windows or exhaust fans during and after the project.
My house was built in 1975. Do I need an asbestos test before renovating?
Health Canada advises contacting a professional to test if your home has building materials you think may contain asbestos before renovations or demolitions, because it was commonly used before 1990 in insulation, siding, floor and ceiling tiles, cement, plaster and surface treatments. If a professional finds it, hire a qualified asbestos removal specialist before the work starts.
Where do I take drywall and lumber in Oakville or Mississauga?
Neither is a curbside item. Halton residents take it to the Halton Waste Management Site at 5400 Regional Road 25 in Milton, open Monday to Saturday, and Mississauga residents take it to a Peel Community Recycling Centre. Drop-off fees apply in both regions, and Peel requires wood to be cut to 1.2 metres or shorter.
The paint smell is still here two weeks later. Is that dust?
No. Paint, varnish, glues and new composite-wood cabinets release volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde into the air, which is off-gassing rather than residue on a surface. Ventilation and time reduce it; cleaning does not. Health Canada also notes that products release formaldehyde faster when indoor humidity is high.
