Grub Damage or Drought Damage: How to Tell Before You Spend a Dollar

The short answer

Pull on the brown patch with both hands. If it lifts away from the soil like a loose piece of carpet, with little or no root resistance, the roots have been eaten and you likely have grubs. If it holds firm and only the blades are dry or dull, the roots are intact and it is drought stress. Grub damage also shows up in ragged, irregular patches and often comes with digging from skunks or raccoons; drought stress fades more evenly across sun-exposed areas.

A brown patch that will not green up gets one of two responses from most homeowners: more water, or a bag of something from the garden centre. Grub damage or drought damage look almost identical from a lawn chair, and treating one like the other wastes both money and the rest of the growing season. There is a two-minute test that tells them apart, and late summer in the GTA is exactly when you need it — this is when both problems peak at once.

Why guessing costs you more than the test does

Watering a patch that has lost its roots to grubs does nothing — there is no root system left to move the water to the blade. The patch stays brown, the water bill goes up, and by the time you notice it did not work, the grubs have had another two or three weeks to spread to the turf around the dead patch. Going the other way is just as wasteful: a lawn that is genuinely drought-stressed does not need an insecticide, and in Ontario most of what would be sold as one is not legal to use on a home lawn anyway. Two minutes with both hands settles which problem you actually have before you spend on either.

The tug test

This is the method Ontario's own turf pest guidance describes for telling grub damage from drought stress, because the two are routinely confused from a distance. Pick a spot at the edge of a brown patch, where it meets grass that still looks healthy.

  1. Grip the grass with both handsTake hold of the turf at the edge of the damaged patch, close to the soil, the way you would grab a section of carpet.
  2. Pull straight upDo not yank sideways. A firm, steady pull upward is enough — you are testing root resistance, not trying to tear the turf.
  3. Read what comes upIf the turf lifts away in a loose mat with little resistance and few or no roots attached, the roots have been fed on below ground.
  4. Check what is underneathWhere the turf lifted, look at the top few centimetres of soil for C-shaped white larvae with a brown head, curled into a C when disturbed. Finding several confirms grubs; finding none but the turf still lifted freely means dig a little deeper before ruling them out.

If instead the turf holds firm and you have to work to separate it from the soil, the root system is intact. Whatever is causing the browning is happening above ground — heat, lack of water, or a mower cutting too low — not below it.

What drought stress looks like once grubs are ruled out

Drought-stressed turf changes colour before it changes texture. The blades take on a dull, grey-blue cast and curl inward to cut their own moisture loss — that greyish tint, more than the eventual brown, is the earliest sign and the one most people miss.

  • Colour fades gradually across whole sun-exposed areas rather than in scattered patches with hard edges.
  • A footprint or a dragged hose stays visibly pressed into the grass for minutes instead of springing back, because the blades no longer hold enough water pressure to recover.
  • The driest spots are consistent from year to year — the strip along a driveway, a slope, anywhere water runs off instead of soaking in.
  • A deep watering brings visible improvement within a few days if the roots underneath are still there to use it.

What grub damage looks like once drought is ruled out

Grub damage tends to look worse than it is from a distance and then turns out to be worse than that up close. The pattern gives it away before you even reach for the turf.

  • Patches are irregular and ragged rather than following the sun, and they spread outward week to week as grubs move to fresh roots.
  • The turf feels spongy or loose underfoot even outside the obviously brown areas, because the root damage runs ahead of the visible colour change.
  • Skunks or raccoons dig at the same patches overnight, tearing up small divots as they hunt the grubs for food — this is one of the fastest tells and needs no test at all.
  • The timing lines up with late summer: this is when this year's grubs are largest and feeding closest to the surface, which is also when the damage becomes visible on top.

Which grub is actually under a GTA lawn

Ontario's provincial crop guidance names the European chafer as one of the most common problem grubs in the province, alongside the June beetle, with Japanese beetle grubs also capable of the same damage. All three are C-shaped white larvae and look close to identical without examining the pattern of bristles on the tail end, so for a homeowner the practical answer is the same regardless of which one it is.

The European chafer's biology explains the August timing directly: adult beetles emerge in early June to early July, mate, and the females look for cool, moist soil in nearby fields or lawns to lay their eggs. The newly hatched larvae start feeding on roots in early August and keep feeding until the ground freezes — which is exactly the window this damage shows up in across the GTA.

What Ontario actually allows you to do about grubs

Ontario's cosmetic pesticides rules remove most chemical insecticides from residential lawn use, the same rules that ban most weed-control sprays on home lawns. Whatever a garden centre sells for grubs has to fit inside the province's allowable list of lower-risk products and biopesticides — a conventional grub-killer insecticide, if you can find one on a shelf, is very likely not legal to apply to a home lawn here.

When it is worth paying someone, and when it is not

A single confirmed grub patch the size of a dinner plate is worth handling yourself: dig it out, check that neighbouring turf still passes the tug test, and reseed the bare spot. If several patches are spreading and animals are digging most nights, that is past the point where a homeowner check is enough — a proper count of grubs per square area against Ontario's own treatment threshold is what decides whether nematodes are worth applying this year or whether the smarter move is repairing the turf now and treating the next generation of grubs while they are small next spring.
