Fall cleanup order for a GTA yard: leaves, last cut, eavestroughs and water lines

The short answer

Work on two tracks. Drain hoses, outside taps and irrigation by the end of October, because hard frosts arrive in November. On the leaf side, mow light layers into the lawn through October, rake the main drop out to suit your city's 2026 pickup dates, make the last cut once the grass stops growing, and clean the eavestroughs after the trees over the roof are bare.

Most fall cleanup lists put every job in one line, and that's how people end up raking twice or cleaning the eavestroughs twice. A GTA yard actually runs on two clocks. The trees decide when the leaf jobs can be finished, and the first run of hard frosts decides when anything that holds water has to be empty. Treat them as two separate tracks and the fall cleanup order sorts itself out.

The dates in this post are the 2026 ones published by Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga, Halton Region, Peel Region and Toronto, checked on 17 October. Every one of these programmes can move for rain or an early snowfall, so confirm your own zone or street before you plan a weekend around it.

Why the water lines can't wait for the leaves

Anything outside that holds water should be drained before freezing nights become routine, and in the GTA that happens in November, while plenty of trees are still dropping. Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1991-2020 normals for Toronto Pearson average 3 nights at or below 0 °C in October and 14.6 in November. Nights colder than -2 °C average under one in October and 8.7 in November.

That puts the freeze track first, and it's short. Disconnect and drain the hoses, close the indoor shut-off valves that feed the outside taps, and drain the irrigation system. Rain Bird's winterizing guide lists the irrigation steps as shutting off the supply, wrapping the main shut-off valve and any above-ground pipe in insulation, then draining the lines with a manual drain valve, an automatic drain valve or a compressed-air blow-out. It suggests calling an irrigation specialist for the blow-out because of the safety risks. The tap side, including how a frost-proof faucet drains, is covered in our post on outdoor taps and irrigation lines before the first frost.

The one good reason to keep a hose working into late October is a patch of lawn you seeded in September that still needs water. Drain the hose after each use and shut the tap down for the year as soon as the seed no longer needs it. How late you can still seed a GTA lawn explains when that point comes.

The leaf track, in the order that saves a second pass

  1. Mow light layers into the lawn through OctoberWhile the grass still shows through, a mower chops dry leaves small enough to settle between the blades, and the lawn never disappears under a mat before the main drop. The method and where it stops working are in mulch-mowing leaves or bagging them.
  2. Cut back the beds and clear patios and walkwaysThis can happen any time the stems have browned, so it fills the weekends while the trees are still full. Leave standing whatever you want for winter; the autumn bed cutback guide lists which plants that is.
  3. Rake the main drop out on your municipality's timingOnce most of the canopy is down, move the bulk of the leaves to the curb or into paper bags to match your zone, route or collection day. This is the step with hard dates, and the table below has them.
  4. Make the last cut once the grass has stopped growingMowing after the big rake also lifts the leaves that came down since. The timing comes from the grass, not the calendar, and the section on the last cut below explains the signal.
  5. Clean the eavestroughs after the trees over the roof are bareDone earlier, they fill again. Clear the downspout outlets and the nearest catch basin the same day, since the rake-out sends leaves straight toward them.
  6. Put out the stragglers before regional collection endsWhatever falls after the gutters are done goes out with the last yard-waste pickups: around mid-November in Toronto, the second week of December in Halton, and on your address's calendar in Peel.

Which pickup dates set your schedule this year?

Step three is where the order turns into a calendar, and neighbouring cities run it very differently. Burlington gives each zone a single window, most Oakville zones get three collection weeks, and Etobicoke no longer has a loose-leaf pickup at all.

Fall 2026 leaf and yard-waste collection, as published by each municipality on 17 October 2026.

Zones 1, 2, 3 and 7 are collected in weeks 1, 3 and 5; zones 4, 5, 6 and 8 in weeks 2, 4 and 6; zones A, B and C in one window between November 16 and 27Piled on the boulevard or road shoulder up to a week early, and out by 7 a.m. when your zone's collection week opens

MississaugaA vacuum truck works older streets (over 35 years) that have lots of big treesBy route, on the City's leaf pickup route map and scheduleIn a neat pile on the boulevard's edge or in the ditch a day or two before your collection week

Etobicoke (City of Toronto)Yard waste every other week on garbage dayAround mid-March to mid-NovemberKraft paper yard-waste bags or rigid open-top containers on your regular collection day

Two things follow from this. In Burlington the big rake belongs in the two days before your zone's date: the City says leaves put out after crews have finished your street won't be picked up, and the leftovers have to be mulched or bagged for Halton. In Etobicoke the regular yard-waste pickups end around mid-November, so later leaves either wait at home or go to one of the City's Drop-Off Depots, which take yard waste year-round.

Oakville owners have one more autumn date that has nothing to do with leaves. General registration for the Town's paid driveway windrow clearing opened October 16 and closes November 7, 2026, for a programme that runs December 1 to March 31, 2027. The windrow programmes across the GTA are compared in an earlier post.

If your street isn't on a leaf route

The Oakville and Mississauga programmes are limited by the age of the neighbourhood and the number of mature trees, so a newer subdivision is often outside both. That doesn't change the order; it changes where step three ends up.

  • Mow thin layers into the lawn and spread chopped leaves on the beds. Burlington's leaf page names mulching into gardens and flowerbeds as an alternative to its pickup.
  • Bag the rest for your regional collection day. Halton refuses plastic and non-paper compostable bags, and Toronto asks for kraft paper bags or rigid open-top containers.
  • Take a car-load to the Halton Waste Management Site in Milton, which accepts leaves in paper bags or in bulk for composting. In Peel, Community Recycling Centres take yard waste for a drop-off fee.
  • Keep a share for a backyard composter, which costs nothing and has no collection date.

The last cut: how late, and why not on the first cold weekend

Keep mowing until the grass stops growing. Ontario's turf guide, OMAFRA Publication 845, lists mowing until leaf growth stops among the steps against pink and grey snow mould, the patches that show up as the snow melts in spring. For pink snow mould it also lists raking leaves in autumn, which is one more reason the last cut comes after the big rake rather than before it.

Leave the deck where it has been. Health Canada's lawn guidance puts mowing height at 6 to 8 cm, and the last cut is an ordinary cut at that height. The signal that it was the last one comes from the lawn: when a week goes by and the grass hasn't grown enough to need mowing, the season is over. The Guelph Turfgrass Institute puts the point where cool-season grasses start growing at a soil temperature of 4.5-7 °C, so a mild spell can bring a little growth back; one extra pass on a dry day takes care of it.

Eavestroughs go late, and sometimes twice

Gutters cleaned in early October under maples or oaks that are still in leaf will fill again as those trees drop. The federal Get Prepared flood guidance says to check eavestroughs and downspouts at least twice a year, in fall and spring, and to clear out leaves and sticks. Toronto's downspout page adds checking every elbow and outlet for debris.

If one tree over the roof drops early and another drops late, a quick check after each is less trouble than a trough that overflows onto the walkway in January. How often eavestroughs need cleaning under mature trees goes through that timing in more detail, and leaf-clogged catch basins and storm drains covers the grate at the end of the driveway.

What to do yourself and what to book

On a bungalow lot most of the leaf track is mower-and-rake work, and there's no reason to pay anyone for it if you have the weekends. The eavestroughs on a two-storey house are different, because the ladder becomes the main risk; our post on ladder work on a two-storey house sets out when to stop. The irrigation blow-out is the other job Rain Bird itself suggests leaving to a specialist.

Every Season's seasonal lawn cleanups cover fall debris removal from lawns and garden beds, and the last eavestrough visit of the year can go to our gutter cleaning and repairs crew once your trees are bare.

Frequently asked questions

What order should fall yard work go in?

Run two tracks. Drain hoses, outside taps and irrigation before November, when Toronto Pearson averages 14.6 nights at or below freezing. Separately, mow light leaf layers in through October, cut back beds, rake the main drop out on your municipality's schedule, make the last cut once the grass stops growing, and clean the eavestroughs after the trees over the roof are bare.

When is leaf pickup in Burlington in 2026?

Burlington publishes one window per zone: zone one November 9 to 13, zone two November 16 to 20 and zone three November 23 to 27. Leaves can go out no more than two days before your zone's date, and anything left after crews finish your street has to be mulched or bagged for Halton.

Does Toronto still vacuum up leaves in Etobicoke?

No. The City has ended the mechanical vacuum leaf collection that served a limited number of residents in Etobicoke, York and Scarborough. Leaves now go out in kraft paper bags or rigid open-top containers on yard-waste day, which runs to around mid-November, and raking leaves onto the road or sidewalk can bring a fine.

When should I do the last mow of the year?

When the grass has stopped growing: a week goes by and it doesn't need a cut. Ontario's turf guide recommends mowing until leaf growth stops as part of preventing snow mould, and the last cut should be at your normal height, which Health Canada puts at 6 to 8 cm.

Should I clean gutters before or after the leaves fall?

After the trees over your roof are bare. Cleaning them while those trees are still in leaf means they fill again. If you have an early tree and a late one, check the eavestroughs after each drop, and clear the downspout outlets at the same time.
